A few weeks ago, I would have described Utah as "soggy." Ben and I were listening to the rain one night, and I commented that we hadn't heard any crickets this year, due to the unseasonably rainy season. It was a passing thought, not particularly poignant at the time. I don't even know if I was lamenting the sound's absence. Well, tonight we were talking in our room, and I heard a cricket chirping extremely loudly nearby. After commenting that Utah must be drying up, I conjectured that the thing must be in the house, it was so loud! Ben calmly stated that he knew it was. I tensed up all over and flew up onto the bed, searching frantically for the scurrying little pest. Chuckling at my expense, my loving husband then informed me that the sound was coming from our lizard's tank. Turns out that one of the baby crickets we had fed the lizard a few weeks ago had escaped his tongue and had grown into a full-size cricket now able to share its mating call with us all. HORRORS! I hope it enjoys its night, because tonight is the noisy, jumpy, creepy little thing's last!
